Edison pearls are something of a rarity. First seen at the 2014 Hong Kong jewellery show, they are a new type of nucleated pearl and probably the first time bead nucleation has been successful in a freshwater mollusc. So what makes them special? Firstly, they are hard to cultivate, output per shell is one pearl, apparently. It's a big risk and the supply is very small. The nucleation enables pearls of up to 16mm to be grown. The end result is a pearl that is almost indistinguishable from a South Sea pearl (I've compared the two and it would fool most retailers). The rich lustre is exactly the same, the natural colour range overlaps, including Tahitian black. What you effectively get is something that looks like a £10,000 South Sea necklace for a fraction of the South Sea price. The only reliable visual tell tale is when the pearls are very large and start to go 'baroque'. The skin of Edison pearls sometimes develops a very slight ripple 'orange peel' pattern (Kasumi pearls do the same thing), Though it is often so slight you really have to look for it and I've seem similar in South Sea baroques.

Long story short, last time we were in HK I was fortunate to get hold of some super large Edisons, just off round starting to turn baroque. My curiosity and enthusiam for a bargain did the rest. I'll leave you to do your own research on the look and price of similar sized South Sea and Tahitian pearl necklaces. We won't tell if you don't. 43/44cm and with one of our nicest gilded silver clasps.
