Considering that Quartz is one of the most common minerals, it doesn't often occur in this pure, clear form as often as we might wish.

Its name is derived from the Greek word krustallos meaning ice, because the Greeks, finding it in caves near Mount Olympus, believed it to be water which had been permanently frozen by the gods.

Although it is found in many parts of the world, the finest rock crystal is from the Hot Springs area of Arkansas. It is also sourced in Cumbria, Switzerland, Brazil and Madagascar.
